Person, Woman, Man, Couple, PeopleDelighting in the great outdoors in Charlotte, North Carolina, has never been easier. With over 125 parks to choose from, you never lack recreational spots. From dog parks to disc golf courses to fishing ponds and memorials, your heart’s desire is at your fingertips. The five parks below offer a taste of this diverse city.

McAlpine Creek Park

Whether recreation or fitness reigns supreme, McAlpine Creek Park has it all. Escape the rays in the gazebo, or plop down on the fishing pier overlooking a 3-acre lake.  Soak up the scenery by biking or hiking the nature trails, and don’t forget to stop at the outdoor fitness center at mile 1.5. Call your friends together for a Sunday afternoon soccer game on one of five fields, or allow your canine to let his guard down at Ray’s Fetching Meadows, a 1-acre off-leash doggie adventure.

Frazier Park

While basketball and tennis courts occupy space at Frazier Park, Our Children’s Memorial Walkway defines it. In the middle of an area equipped for living children to play sits a memorial for those who have passed. Inscribed bricks name people of all ages who left a father or mother behind. Cherry trees shade the space, and benches provide rest to those who mourn the loss and celebrate the life of their son or daughter.

William R. Davie Park

For a day of family fun, choose William R. Davie Park, which sports 107 acres of land. Lighted softball fields and soccer fields, as well as unlit basketball and volleyball courts, cater to all levels of athletes. Horseshoe pits supply diversion for the less athletic. Reserve the William R. Davie Center for parties of 180 or less year-round or choose an outdoor shelter for smaller gatherings. Youngsters take joy in two playgrounds, walking trails, and the pond.

Elon Park

Elon Park Elementary School has an advantage over most because it shares some of its territory with Elon Park. Because of that, it’s a perfect place for the kids to let loose. Two classrooms, a gymnasium, and a game room compose part of the park. Enjoy the playground after school ends or take a walk to the pond for fishing. Want to learn a new sport? Check out the Eager Beaver Beginner Disc Golf Course or watch the pros on the Angry Beaver Advanced Course. Soccer and youth softball fields are also available.

Park Road Park

If you need a place to host your next large gathering, consider reserving one of four Park Road Shelters. When your guests finish meeting together, they can benefit from eight basketball courts, 12 tennis courts, or six baseball fields. They can stroll around the 11-acre lake, participate in a volleyball game, or even relish a game of horseshoes. The Newtown Memorial Playground entertains children and reminds visitors of the lives lost in the Sandy Hook Massacre of 2014. In 2015, The Sandy Hook Memorial Tree was dedicated as an addition to the tribute.
