That feeling of sinking your toes into grains of wet, clumped sand, the sound of powerful waves crashing against the shoreline and pulling back out just before they reach you. Few things are quite as relaxing, and after a long, hot, and busy summer, you deserve a chance to relax. With the summer winding down, though, you’ll have to move quickly in order to take advantage of the Carolinas’ unbeatable beaches before the cool fall sets in. Just to give you a place to start, here are three of the best beaches in the Carolinas.

Hatteras Island

If you’re looking for a taste of nature in North Carolina, then you need to get in your car and head straight for Hatteras Island. This 50-mile-long island boasts the longest track of untouched, undeveloped beach on the east coast. This is the perfect getaway for those who want to enjoy a getaway into nature. Along the coast of Hatteras Island, you can enjoy scuba diving, surfing, fishing, and a sunset that paints the sky every night. If you really feel like getting a thorough taste of nature, you can even camp on the shore.

While you’re on Hatteras, don’t forget to check out the Hatteras Lighthouse. It’s a climb to the top, but the view is unbeatable.

Hilton Head Island

Located in South Carolina, Hilton Head Island is the place to go if you want the beach mixed in with a more luxurious and exciting experience. Not only does Hilton Head feature a beautiful beach with great swimming and surfing, but if you have the money, you can walk right onto the sand from your beachfront hotel or villa.

Don’t feel like spending all day at the beach? Hilton Head also features golf courses, tennis courts, and places to go cycling. Feel like doing some shopping? There are plenty of department stores mixed in with unique specialty shops. Want a taste of some culture? Check out some of the art galleries at Hilton Head. Whatever you or any member of your family may want to do, you’ll all be satisfied at Hilton Head.

Corolla Beach

Back in North Carolina, at the very north of the state, is Corolla Beach. Touching the Virginia border, it offers more luxury than Hatteras Island, but more nature than Hilton Head. Since Corolla Beach was developed as recently as the 1980s, there is a very clean and modern feel to it, so it still maintains its natural beauty. Mansions by the sea, some of which include up to 23 rooms, are just waiting to be rented out. Just a few miles away, and only accessible by four-wheeler, are rolling dunes where you can watch wild mustangs graze.

Corolla Beach offers the best of both luxury and nature. You can enjoy time, relaxing in a cool seaside mansion, or cozying up beside a crackling bonfire at night.

You really can’t go wrong with any of these beaches. Whatever you may be looking for in a weekend getaway to the beach, you’ll find it somewhere on the coast of the Carolinas.
