Christmas Tree, Ornaments, ChristmasFinding the perfect Christmas tree is one of the most memorable parts of the holiday season. Thankfully, North Carolina residents have access to some of the country’s best Christmas tree farms. If you’re planning to take a family day trip to hunt down the perfect evergreen, here are a few Christmas tree farms worth visiting.

Appalachian Evergreens

Located in Boone, Appalachian Evergreens has been producing Christmas trees, garlands, wreaths, and other handmade holiday greenery since 1933. The family-owned and operated business nestled in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains is one of the most picturesque locations for choose-and-cut trees. The farm sells amazing 4- to 9-foot Fraser firs at only $8 per foot and is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends from Nov. 19 to Dec. 11.

In addition to trees, Appalachian Evergreens creates wreaths, garlands, and sprays made from Fraser fir, boxwood, or white pine. The business also provides wholesale greenery for fundraising projects.

Little Switzerland Fraser Firs

Situated just outside of Burnsville in Western North Carolina, Little Switzerland Fraser Firs is a pet- and family-friendly farm that allows you to choose your favorite Christmas tree. Fraser firs are particularly hardy trees with a fragrant evergreen scent, which is why they’re such a popular option.

Little Switzerland Fraser Firs offers trees ranging from 7 to 12 feet, although they can be trimmed shorter if necessary. Prices are all-inclusive at $8 per foot, so there are no surprises. You can even purchase an innovative tree stand system designed by the owners themselves, which they will gladly install on the tree before sending you on your way.

Sugar Plum Farms

Just north of Little Switzerland is the beautiful community of Plumtree, which is home to Sugar Plum Farms. This location is among the state’s best Christmas tree farms for families with small children because it consists of a hayride to pick your tree. You can also enjoy hot beverages, pond-side picnic tables, and souvenirs at no additional cost. The farmhands will even take your family’s picture as you chop down your own tree.

For an additional charge, you can go trout-fishing in the pond or purchase homemade apple butter or honey. The farm’s 2016 hours of operation run from Nov. 15 through Dec. 20, and tour groups are welcome by appointment.

Cornett Deal Christmas Tree Farm

Boasting five fields of evergreen trees, Cornett Deal Christmas Tree Farm is a traditional farm with the added perk of having a gift shop on-site. When you’re traveling from the Charlotte area to the High Country, it’s nice to have a place to shop for handmade jewelry, pottery, scarves, knitted hats, and other items. Visitors will also want to try a cup of the owner’s famous hot apple cider.

A trip to this wonderful family farm includes hayrides to any of the fields, allowing you to search for the perfect Fraser or Canaan fir. The season kicks off with opening day Nov. 19 and runs on weekends through Dec. 17.

With so many wonderful Christmas farms in North Carolina, why settle for an artificial tree? Take a trip to a choose-and-cut farm this year!
