INDYCAR hosted the unveiling of Honda’s Superspeedway Aero Kit at the end of April. Stallings area Honda is excited to share some photos and video of them here.

It was an exciting day for Honda, as the reveal for the 99th running of the Indianapolis 500 was made public. Produced by Honda Performance Development (Honda’s North American racing division), this year’s model includes a variety of aerodynamic upgrades and components for its six Indy car teams.

“We’re excited to unveil our Super Speedway aero kit, the newest element in this era of enhanced manufacturer competition in the Verizon Indy Car Series,” said Art St. Cyr, president of HPD. St. Cyr explained the exhaustive research process, which required thousands of hours of development and testing to ensure a win and a superior drive. The testing involved the Indy V6 super engine and two innovative aero kits. These cars cut through the track with little drag. The Indianapolis 500 is the company’s most important goal this year, and in a few short weeks, all the time and research will be put to the test.

The kits were developed by utilization of the newest Computer-Aided Design and paired with Computational Fluid Dynamics technology. Then HPD used Driver-In-Loop Simulators to minimize waste at the prototype stage, to predetermine aerodynamic direction before creating full-size components.

Honda utilized wind-tunnel testing scenarios to test and observe the aerodynamic performance characteristics. The wind tunnels also assisted with creating maps to be used during the on-track testing prior to the start of production earlier this year.

Honda’s Indy Superspeedway kits will make their on-track debut Sunday, May 3 during Open Test at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Indianapolis 500 official practice opens on Monday, May 11, and the 99th running of the Indianapolis 500 scheduled for Sunday, May 24.
